lignum vitae    6"
private collection

Lignum vitae is known as one of the hardest and densest woods, if not THE hardest and densest. It is so dense that it won't float. Gordon told me that ship builders used to use lignum vitae wood as ball bearings because of its hardness and ability to resist rot. Carving it is a challenge to any chisel, but the polish is unbelievably smooth because the grain is so tight. And it smells divine. Love it. But very hard to find. Like several other smaller wood carvings of mine, this piece honors the women in prison I had the privilege to work with. Some of the women had to compress their spirits into a very tight space just to survive.
